The short answer
All four premium trains have Tatkal, and on all four the AC classes open at 10:00 AM, one day before the journey. What differs is which classes have it, how small the quota is and what happens when it's gone — and on the busiest of these trains it goes in seconds.
What to do, step by step
Decide the class tonight, not at 10:00
On a Rajdhani or Duronto it's 3A or 2A, because First AC has no Tatkal. On a Vande Bharat or Shatabdi it's chair car, with Executive as a smaller second try. Choosing during the window costs the seat.
Count the day from the train's starting station
If the train left its origin the evening before it reaches you, the Tatkal window opens a day earlier than you'd think. Getting this wrong is the commonest way to miss a premium-train Tatkal entirely.
Prefer the train that starts nearest you
Tatkal berths usually sit with the station where the train starts, and a halt shares a smaller pool. From Kanpur, Jaipur or Nagpur, a Rajdhani that started elsewhere is about the hardest Tatkal there is — our city Tatkal pages say which station holds the quota.
Have a second premium train ready
Where a corridor has a Rajdhani and a Duronto, two Rajdhanis from different terminals, or a Vande Bharat and a Shatabdi, each carries its own Tatkal quota. When one sells out in seconds, the other may still be open.
If it waitlists, treat TQWL as a long shot
Confirmed Tatkal tickets aren't refunded on cancellation, so few come back into the Tatkal waiting list. At the chart, Tatkal berths that didn't sell go to the general waiting list, not to TQWL.
Want First AC? Go early, not Tatkal
With no Tatkal in 1A, a First AC berth for tomorrow can only come from the general quota or a cancellation. For 1A — and above all a coupé — book the day the reservation window opens.
Mistakes that cost people the journey
- Planning on Tatkal for First AC, which has none
- Counting the Tatkal day from your boarding date instead of the train's start
- Trying one train when the corridor has a second premium train with its own quota
- Expecting Premium Tatkal on a Rajdhani, Shatabdi or Duronto — those trains don't carry it
What we can and can't do
On the busiest Rajdhanis and Vande Bharats, Tatkal can be gone within moments of opening, and nobody can promise a seat exists. What we do is pick the train and class with a real chance the night before, have it staged before the window opens, try a second train where the corridor has one, and tell you straight away if it hasn't worked — so there's still time for another plan. Confirmed berth or 100% refund — RAC doesn't count.
Tatkal, train by train
- Rajdhani
- Tatkal in 2A and 3A. First AC has no Tatkal quota — on this or any train. No Premium Tatkal either. A Tatkal waiting list (TQWL) is a long shot, and a confirmed Tatkal ticket isn't refunded on cancellation.
- Duronto
- Tatkal in 2A and 3A, and in Sleeper on the Durontos that carry it — Sleeper opens at 11:00, not 10:00. No Tatkal in First AC and no Premium Tatkal.
- Vande Bharat (chair car)
- Tatkal in AC Chair Car, opening at 10:00. Executive Chair Car is one or two coaches, so it is a much smaller pool. A chair car has seats, not berths, so there is no RAC stage: a Tatkal waiting list either confirms or is cancelled at the chart.
- Shatabdi
- Tatkal in AC Chair Car, and Railways' Tatkal rules set aside a few Executive Class seats in each coach. No Premium Tatkal. Seats, not berths, so no RAC.
- Vande Bharat sleeper
- The new sleeper trains issue confirmed berths only — no RAC and no waiting list — and Railway Board's rules for them list only a few special quotas, with no Tatkal among them. Book these early rather than planning on the day before.
- Which day it opens
- One day before the journey date counted from the day the train leaves its starting station, not the day you board. On a Rajdhani you board after midnight at a halt, that means the window opens two days before you travel.
What our customers say
“Messaged at 9:50 AM for a same-day AC Tatkal. They were ready at 10 sharp and I had a confirmed berth within minutes. A real person beats refreshing the app yourself.”
“Booked Tatkal for our whole family in one go on WhatsApp. Super smooth, kept us updated.”
Answered straight
Is there Tatkal in Vande Bharat?+
Yes. The chair-car Vande Bharats have a Tatkal quota, which opens at 10:00 AM one day before the journey, like other AC classes. The new Vande Bharat sleeper trains are different: they issue confirmed berths only, with no RAC or waiting list, and Tatkal isn't among their quotas.
Does Rajdhani have Tatkal?+
Yes, in 2A and 3A. First AC has no Tatkal quota on any train, so a 1A berth for tomorrow can only come from the general quota or a cancellation.
Is there Premium Tatkal on Rajdhani, Shatabdi or Duronto?+
No. Those trains don't carry Premium Tatkal; ordinary Tatkal is their last-minute quota.
What time does Tatkal open for Shatabdi and Vande Bharat?+
10:00 AM, one day before the journey date counted from the train's starting station. Their chair cars are AC classes, so the 11:00 Sleeper window doesn't apply.
Can I cancel a confirmed Tatkal ticket on a Rajdhani?+
You can, but a confirmed Tatkal ticket isn't refunded on cancellation — except in cases such as the train being cancelled, running more than three hours late at your boarding station, being diverted away from your stations, or your class not being provided.
