First AC is the only class where your pet stays with you
Sleeper, 3A and 2A do not permit a pet in the compartment. The accommodation that does is First AC — a coupé, which is two berths, or a cabin, which is four — and it generally has to be booked in its entirety rather than berth by berth. That is not a loophole; it is how the rule is designed, because the animal is with you in a private, enclosed space rather than in a shared bay.
The alternative is the brake van, where your pet travels in a separate compartment away from you for the whole journey, checked on at stops. For a short hop some owners accept that. For thirty hours to Bangalore, most would not — and the point of this page is that you do not have to.

Nobody walks past your animal
In a shared bay, strangers pass within inches all night — some will reach out, some will object to a dog being there at all. A coupé removes both problems entirely. The compartment is yours.
No arguments with co-passengers
The most common thing that goes wrong when people improvise is a fellow passenger objecting. In a coupé there is nobody to object. You are not negotiating your pet's presence with anyone for thirty hours.
A calmer animal
An enclosed, quiet space with people it knows is far less distressing for a dog than an open coach of noise and movement. Owners consistently report the animal settles within an hour and sleeps most of the way.
Security while you sleep

Why the train, and not the flight or the car
Flying with a pet
- Larger animals generally travel in the cargo hold, not with you in the cabin — you are separated for the whole flight
- Many airlines restrict or refuse snub-nosed breeds outright, because the breathing risk in a hold is real. Pugs, bulldogs, boxers and Persian cats are commonly affected
- Cabin travel, where offered at all, comes with weight and carrier limits most dogs exceed
- Policies differ between carriers and change without much notice, so a booking that worked last year may not this year
- Airport handling, holding areas and temperature swings are stressful before the flight even starts
Driving there
- Delhi to Goa or Bangalore is roughly 1,900–2,100 km — two to three days of realistic driving, not one
- That means overnight stops, and pet-friendly accommodation on a highway is not something you can rely on finding
- The animal is confined in a moving car for far longer in total than the train journey would take
- It is exhausting for the driver, which is its own safety question on a long route
First AC coupé

Where the train is genuinely the best option
On a six-hour journey, drive. Beyond that the arithmetic changes completely.
Delhi / Hazrat Nizamuddin → Goa
Roughly 1,900 km. Driving is two to three days each way with overnight stops you cannot count on. The Konkan route is one of the most popular pet journeys we book, especially for people relocating or spending a season there.
Delhi / Hazrat Nizamuddin → Bengaluru
Around 2,100 km and well over 30 hours by train — but a single overnight in a private cabin against three days at the wheel. Relocations dominate this route, and a family moving with a dog has no realistic alternative.
New Delhi → Kolkata / Howrah
About 1,450 km east. Long enough that driving is impractical and flying means the hold. One of the routes where owners are most often told, wrongly, that the pet simply cannot come.
Hazrat Nizamuddin / New Delhi → Mumbai
The corridor with the most premium services, so First AC availability is better here than on most routes — though it books out early and the coupé goes first.
New Delhi / Hazrat Nizamuddin → Chennai & the south
Two nights on board. The case for a private cabin over a cargo hold is at its strongest on a journey this long, and it is where we get the most relocation enquiries.
What actually has to happen
There is more to it than booking a ticket, and this is where most owners give up. The parts below are what we handle, so that you are not discovering a requirement at the platform on the morning of travel.
Book the whole coupé or cabin
Not individual berths. This is the part that decides everything else, and on a popular date it needs real lead time — see below.
Veterinary fitness certificate
A certificate from a vet confirming the animal is fit to travel and vaccinated. There are timing requirements around when it must be issued.
Register the pet with the railway
The animal is booked separately from your passenger ticket, arranged at the originating station rather than in the online booking. Charges apply.
Carry the paperwork

First AC is usually a single coach on the entire train, and only part of it is coupés — often two. That makes this the smallest inventory in Indian rail ticketing, and because you need the whole compartment rather than a berth, there is no partial success. Either the coupé is yours or the journey does not happen.
- Book the day the reservation window opens for any popular date. On this one that is the whole strategy, not an optimisation.
- Not every train carries a First AC coach. We check which services on your route do before you fix a date.
- A four-berth cabin gives the same lockable privacy and is materially easier to get than a two-berth coupé.

Travelling with a pet, answered properly
Can I take my dog with me on an Indian train?+
Yes — in a First AC coupé or cabin, where the animal travels in the compartment with you. It generally means booking the whole coupé or cabin rather than individual berths, and there is paperwork including a veterinary fitness certificate. In Sleeper, 3A and 2A a pet is not permitted in the compartment; the alternative there is the brake van, where the animal travels separately from you.
Why does the whole coupé have to be booked?+
Because the arrangement depends on the compartment being private. A pet cannot be in a space shared with passengers who did not agree to it — so the rule is built around you having the compartment to yourself. That is also why it works so well: nobody walks past, nobody objects, and the animal settles.
Is the train better than flying with a pet?+
For most owners on a long domestic route, yes. Larger animals generally fly in the cargo hold rather than the cabin, which means you are separated for the whole flight, and many airlines restrict or refuse snub-nosed breeds because the breathing risk in a hold is genuine. On a train in a First AC coupé your pet is beside you the entire journey with no breed restriction of that kind. What about just driving there?+
Delhi to Goa or Bangalore is roughly 1,900 to 2,100 km — realistically two to three days each way, with overnight stops where pet-friendly accommodation is not something you can rely on finding. The animal spends far longer confined in total than the train journey would take, and the driver arrives exhausted. For anything under about six hours, driving is fine. Beyond that the train is usually the better answer.
What paperwork do I need?+
A veterinary fitness certificate confirming the animal is fit to travel and vaccinated, plus the pet's own booking, which is arranged at the originating station separately from your passenger ticket. Can I take a cat, or another animal?+
Rules differ by animal and are applied differently at different stations. Tell us what you are travelling with and we will confirm the current position for your specific journey rather than guessing. Most of what we book is dogs, but ask — it is worth a conversation rather than assuming the answer is no.
How far ahead should I book?+
As early as the reservation window allows, and earlier than you think. First AC is usually one coach on the train and coupés are often just two of them — the smallest inventory on the network. Because you need the whole compartment, there is no partial success and a waiting list is rarely worth holding.
What if the coupé is not available on my date?+
A four-berth cabin gives you the same lockable privacy and is noticeably easier to get, so that is usually the first alternative we look at. After that, a different train the same day, or a neighbouring date. We will tell you honestly when a date cannot be made to work rather than booking a waiting list on inventory that cannot expand.
Will my dog be comfortable for a 30-hour journey?+
Most settle within the first hour and sleep a great deal of the way — an enclosed, quiet compartment with people it knows is far less distressing than an open coach or a cargo hold.
