Need a train ticket today? What actually works
If you have to travel today, the usual routes are mostly closed: Tatkal is for tomorrow's trains, and today's waiting lists are close to the chart. There are still real options — they just aren't the ones the apps put first.

What to do, step by step
Check current booking
Once the chart is prepared, berths still unfilled are released for current booking until shortly before departure. For same-day travel this is the most useful option there is.
Look at every train leaving today
Including ones from other Delhi terminals. A later train from Nizamuddin or Anand Vihar may have space when New Delhi departures don't.
Try a different boarding station
Current availability can differ by station. The originating terminal or another station on the route may show berths the nearest one doesn't.
If you already hold a ticket, recheck it
A waitlisted ticket may have moved to RAC, which lets you board. Check the PNR before assuming you can't travel.
Consider travelling tomorrow
If today can't work, Tatkal for tomorrow opens today — 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for Sleeper and seating. A confirmed berth tomorrow often beats a scramble today.
Unreserved, as a last resort
A general ticket is valid only in unreserved coaches. It gets you on the train, but not a berth, and you can't use it in a reserved coach.
Mistakes that cost people the journey
- Waiting for Tatkal on the day — it opens the day before travel
- Boarding a reserved coach without a reserved ticket
- Checking one app for one train instead of current availability across trains
- Giving up on today before checking the other Delhi terminals
Same-day travel is the hardest ask
We'll tell you plainly what is realistically left today and whether tomorrow is the better plan. Sometimes the honest answer is that a confirmed berth tomorrow is worth more than trying to force today.
What our customers say
“Waitlisted ticket got confirmed two days before travel. They actually followed up — rare these days.”
“Senior-citizen lower berth for my parents, exactly as requested. Very courteous staff.”
Answered straight
Can I book Tatkal for a train leaving today?+
No. Tatkal opens one day before the journey date, so for a train leaving today the Tatkal window was yesterday. For today, current booking is the option to look at.
When does current booking open?+
After the train's chart is prepared, and it stays open until shortly before departure. The timing depends on when the train leaves, so check current availability for your specific service.
Can I get a confirmed ticket on the same day?+
Sometimes — through current booking or cancellations, particularly on less busy trains and dates. On peak days on busy corridors it's genuinely hard, and we'll tell you honestly if it isn't going to happen.
Can I travel in sleeper with a general ticket?+
No. A general ticket is valid only in unreserved coaches, and travelling in a reserved coach on one can be penalised.
