Tatkal booking failed? What to do next

A failed Tatkal attempt leaves two problems at once: whether you've lost money, and how you're still getting there. Take them in this order — the first takes two minutes, and the second has more answers than it seems at 10:05 in the morning.

What to do, step by step

01

Check whether a ticket was issued

Before trying again, look at your booked tickets, email and SMS. An attempt that looked like it failed sometimes went through — and booking twice means paying twice.

02

Money deducted, no ticket? Let the refund come through

Failed transactions are refunded automatically to the way you paid — UPI is usually quickest, cards and net banking can take a few working days. If nothing arrives after about a week, raise it with IRCTC or Rail Madad with the transaction reference.

03

Got a Tatkal waiting list? Treat it as a long shot

TQWL is a separate queue, and because confirmed Tatkal tickets aren't refunded on cancellation, few berths come back into it. Hold it, but keep planning.

04

Check Premium Tatkal on the same train

On trains that offer it, Premium Tatkal may still show seats at a higher, rising fare. There's no waiting list and no refund on a confirmed ticket, so decide your limit first.

05

Widen the search

Other trains on the corridor, another Delhi terminal, a different class or the next day. The general quota on a nearby date is often a better bet than a second Tatkal attempt.

06

Look at current booking

After the chart is prepared, berths still unfilled are released for current booking until shortly before departure.

Avoid these

Mistakes that cost people the journey

  • Booking again before checking whether the first attempt went through
  • Treating a Tatkal waiting list as a plan instead of a long shot
  • Retrying the same sold-out train instead of checking the whole corridor
  • Paying Premium Tatkal without deciding a limit first

What we can and can't do

Tatkal is a small quota and popular trains sell out fast — nobody can promise a seat exists on your train. What we do is pick the train, class and quota most likely to work, handle the booking, and tell you straight away if it hasn't, so there's still time for another plan. Confirmed, or 100% refund.

What our customers say

Messaged at 9:50 AM for a same-day AC Tatkal. They were ready at 10 sharp and I had a confirmed berth within minutes. A real person beats refreshing the app yourself.

Questions

Answered straight

Money deducted but Tatkal ticket not booked — will I get it back?+

Yes. Failed transactions are refunded automatically to the original payment method, usually within a few working days depending on how you paid, and you don't need to file a TDR. If it hasn't arrived after about a week, raise it with IRCTC or Rail Madad with the transaction reference.

Why does Tatkal booking fail so often?+

A small quota meets huge demand, so seats on popular trains can go within moments of opening, and a slow payment step or a session timeout loses the race. It usually isn't anything you did wrong.

Can I try Tatkal again on the same train?+

Only while that train's Tatkal quota still has seats. Once it's gone, a Tatkal waiting list or Premium Tatkal (on trains that offer it) are what remain, and neither is a sure thing.

What are the Tatkal booking times?+

One day before the journey date: 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC classes such as Sleeper.
