Tatkal vs Premium Tatkal: which should you book?

Both open at the same moment, one day before your journey. The difference is how you pay and what happens when seats run out: Tatkal adds a fixed charge and can still give you a waiting list, while Premium Tatkal — on the trains that offer it — charges a fare that climbs as seats go, and gives you a confirmed ticket or nothing.

The part most people miss

Premium Tatkal is a higher price, not a better chance

Premium Tatkal doesn't add berths to the train — it sells part of the Tatkal quota at a fare that rises with demand. When it still shows seats after Tatkal has sold out, that's the price slowing buyers down, not extra room. It can genuinely rescue a hard date, but decide what the journey is worth before the window opens, because there's no waiting list to fall back on if the attempt fails.

Our advice

Which one to book

Book Tatkal if…

You want a predictable price and can plan around the window. If it waitlists, a TQWL is something to hold — just not something to rely on.

Consider Premium Tatkal if…

Tatkal has sold out, your train offers Premium Tatkal, and the trip is worth a higher fare. Set your ceiling in advance, not while the price is climbing.

Look elsewhere if…

Both are gone or the fare is beyond your limit. Another train on the corridor, a different class or current booking after the chart can be better value.

What our customers say

Messaged at 9:50 AM for a same-day AC Tatkal. They were ready at 10 sharp and I had a confirmed berth within minutes. A real person beats refreshing the app yourself.

Questions

Answered straight

What is the difference between Tatkal and Premium Tatkal?+

Both open one day before the journey date at the same times. Tatkal adds a fixed charge to the normal fare and can put you on a waiting list if seats run out. Premium Tatkal, offered on selected trains, uses a fare that rises as seats sell and issues only confirmed tickets — no waiting list and no RAC.

Is Premium Tatkal worth it?+

When Tatkal has sold out and the journey really matters, it can be. It isn't a better chance of a seat — it's last-minute inventory at a higher, rising price — so decide what the trip is worth before you try.

Can I get a refund on a Premium Tatkal ticket?+

Not by cancelling a confirmed one. Like a confirmed Tatkal ticket, it isn't refunded on cancellation, apart from situations such as the train being cancelled. Book it only once your plans are firm.

Does Premium Tatkal have a waiting list?+

No. Premium Tatkal issues confirmed tickets only. If none are left, the booking simply doesn't go through.

Do all trains have Premium Tatkal?+

No, only selected trains. Check whether yours does before planning around it, and keep regular Tatkal or another train as your first option.
