Book on IRCTC yourself, or use a train agent?
Plenty of journeys don't need an agent — an off-peak trip on a quiet route takes minutes to book yourself. The difference shows up on the hard ones: a festival date, a Tatkal morning, a group or a coupé. Here is an honest look at what each option involves.

Booking it yourself vs A licensed agent desk
| Booking it yourself | A licensed agent desk | |
|---|---|---|
| What you do | Pick the train, quota and class, enter every passenger, pay, then track the PNR | Send your route, dates and passenger details once, on WhatsApp |
| Choosing the train | Usually whatever the app shows first, unless you know the corridor | Every train, quota, class and boarding point on the route, read together |
| Tatkal mornings | You race the window yourself, on your own connection and payment | The desk handles the booking; you get the result |
| If it waitlists | You judge the odds and work out a backup | A straight answer on whether it will clear, and the next option lined up |
| Groups and special bookings | Many passengers, split bookings and berth choices to manage alone | Handled as one job — groups, coupés, pets, GST invoices |
| Cost | The fare plus the booking platform's own charges | The fare plus a service charge |
| Best for | Straightforward journeys with time to spare | Hard dates, Tatkal, groups, premium bookings and anyone short of time |
The expensive part of booking yourself is the wrong train
On an easy route, doing it yourself costs a few minutes. On a hard one, the cost isn't the booking — it's choosing a train or quota that was never going to confirm, and finding out at the chart, when the alternatives have gone. That judgement, made before you pay, is most of what an experienced desk is for.
Which one to book
Book it yourself if…
It's an off-peak date with plenty of availability, you're comfortable on IRCTC, and a waiting list wouldn't wreck your plans. You don't need us for that.
Use an agent if…
The date is fixed and hard — a festival, a Tatkal morning, a Rajdhani in peak season — or you're booking a group, a coupé or a pet, or you'd simply rather hand it over.
For companies…
If your people travel by rail regularly, one desk with GST invoicing and a single point of contact replaces a spread of personal accounts and expense claims.
What our customers say
“Waitlisted ticket got confirmed two days before travel. They actually followed up — rare these days.”
“Helpful agents, explained my PNR honestly instead of overpromising. Will use again.”
Answered straight
Is it safe to book train tickets through an agent?+
With an authorised one, yes. A legitimate agent books a genuine ticket in the passenger's name, which you can check yourself on the official PNR status. Be wary of anyone who can't show their authorisation, or who takes payment for a ticket you can't verify.
Do agents get seats that aren't available online?+
Every confirmed ticket comes from the Indian Railways reservation system, however it's booked. What an experienced desk adds is knowing which train, quota, class and boarding point is most likely to confirm on your route — and doing the booking and the follow-up for you.
Why do agents charge a service fee?+
For the work and the judgement: reading the route, handling the booking at busy moments, tracking the PNR and lining up alternatives if it doesn't clear. On an easy journey that's rarely worth paying for; on a hard one it often is.
Can I book for family or colleagues?+
Yes. You can book for family, a team or a group — just make sure each passenger's name, age and gender match the ID they'll carry on the journey.
