Coupé — 2 berths
A private compartment with two berths and a door that locks. No strangers, no upper-berth negotiation, no corridor traffic through your space. This is what people mean when they say they want privacy on a train, and there are usually only a couple of them in the whole coach.
Cabin — 4 berths
The same lockable privacy with four berths. The right choice for a family of three or four travelling together, and considerably easier to get than a coupé because there are more of them.
2A is not the same thing
Second AC has curtains, not doors. It is comfortable and it is not private — people walk past, curtains move, and you share the bay. If privacy is the reason you are booking, 2A will disappoint you and it is worth knowing that before you pay.
Honeymoons, anniversaries, and simply not wanting to spend the night with strangers
A coupé turns an overnight journey from something to endure into part of the trip. It is the booking we are asked for most around wedding season, and the one people most often leave too late — there are typically only two coupés in a First AC coach, and on a popular date they are gone within hours of the window opening.

First AC is the only class where your dog can travel in the compartment with you
This is the part most people discover too late. A pet cannot simply be brought into a Sleeper or 2A berth — the accommodation that allows a dog to travel with its owner in the compartment is a First AC coupé or cabin, and it generally has to be booked in full rather than as individual berths. There is paperwork involved, including a veterinary fitness certificate, and it is arranged through the railway rather than in the ticket booking itself.

Why a coupé is the hardest booking on the train
First AC is usually a single coach on the whole train, and only a fraction of it is coupés. That makes this the smallest inventory in Indian rail ticketing — smaller than 1A generally, which is already the first class to sell out. There is no clever quota that fixes it and no waiting list worth holding. The only thing that works is being early, and knowing which trains on your route actually carry a First AC coach in the first place, because plenty do not.

Can I book a whole coupé for just two people?+
Yes — that is exactly what a coupé is, a two-berth compartment. What people sometimes mean by this question is whether they can block a four-berth cabin for two, which is a different and more expensive request but also possible. Tell us which you actually want and we will price both.
Can my dog travel with me in the train?+
In a First AC coupé or cabin, yes — that is the accommodation where a pet can travel with its owner rather than in the brake van. What is the difference between a coupé and 2A?+

If your reason for booking is privacy — a honeymoon, a pet, a medical need — 2A will not give you what you are paying for, and we would rather tell you that than sell you the cheaper ticket and have you find out overnight.

Can you get a coupé at short notice?+
Occasionally, through a cancellation. We will look honestly and tell you when it is not going to happen rather than booking you a waiting list on the smallest inventory on the train. Where a coupé is gone, we will usually find you a cabin.
