IRCTC payment failed on your foreign card? What NRIs can do

Card declined on IRCTC? Send the journey on WhatsApp and pay another way.

  • The full amount is agreed in writing before anything is booked. You pay through the options we confirm on WhatsApp, or a family member in India pays.
  • A licensed agent books it in the passenger's name. No IRCTC account needed.
  • Confirmed berth or 100% refund — RAC doesn't count

The short answer

Payment is the second place NRIs get stuck. You pick the train, enter your card and it's declined, or worse, the money leaves your account and no ticket appears. Take it in this order: find out whether you were charged, then fix the payment, and only then try again, because a second attempt before checking can mean paying twice.

In order

What to do, step by step

01

Check whether a ticket was issued

Before trying again, look at your booked tickets and your email. An attempt that looked like it failed sometimes went through, and booking twice means paying twice.

02

Charged but no ticket? Let the refund come through

Failed transactions are refunded automatically to the way you paid, and cards can take several working days. If nothing arrives after about a week, raise it with IRCTC or Rail Madad with the transaction reference.

03

Choose the payment option meant for international cards

IRCTC has offered a separate option for international cards since 2016, and which cards it accepts has changed since. Look at the options on your payment page and pick the international one if it is shown. The ordinary Indian-card options usually decline a foreign card.

04

Ask your bank about online and international payments

Banks often block or hold online payments to Indian merchants until you approve them in the bank's own app. A quick look in your banking app can clear it. But the decline may come from IRCTC's payment gateway rather than your bank, and then another card of the same kind won't help.

05

Let a family member in India pay

A relative with an Indian card or UPI can book from their own IRCTC account and pay themselves. For a journey this week, that is often the quickest fix.

06

Or hand it to a licensed agent

Send the journey and passenger details on WhatsApp. We agree the full amount in writing before anything is booked, you pay through the options we confirm on WhatsApp, or a family member pays, and the e-ticket comes to you with a PNR you can check.

Avoid these

Mistakes that cost people the journey

  • Trying the same card again and again without checking for a ticket or a charge
  • Booking twice because the first attempt looked like it failed
  • Reading a declined card as a sold-out train
  • Sending card numbers, PINs or bank codes over chat to anyone

What we can and can't do

We can't make your bank or IRCTC's payment gateway accept a card. What we can do is take card payment on IRCTC out of the picture, tell you straight away if a train can't be made to confirm, and refund you in full if we can't deliver a confirmed berth. RAC doesn't count.

Questions

Answered straight

Does IRCTC accept foreign credit and debit cards?+

IRCTC added an international-card payment option in 2016, after earlier accepting only American Express, and its payment gateways have changed since. Whether your card works depends on the card network, your bank and the option IRCTC shows on the day, so no one can promise either way. If it declines, the other options on this page still work.

Money was deducted but there is no ticket. Will I get it back?+

Yes. Failed transactions are refunded automatically to the original payment method, and you don't need to file a TDR. If nothing arrives after about a week, raise it with IRCTC or Rail Madad with the transaction reference.

Can my relative in India pay for my ticket?+

Yes. They can book from their own IRCTC account and pay with their Indian card or UPI, or pay for a booking we make for you. Either way the ticket is in the passenger's own name.

How do I pay you from abroad?+

We agree the full amount before anything is booked and share the payment options on WhatsApp. If it's easier, a family member in India can pay.

How do I know it is safe to pay an agent from abroad?+

Check a YTSK licence from Indian Railways, a registered office, a ticket in the passenger's own name with a PNR you can check on IRCTC or NTES, an amount agreed in writing, and a GST invoice on request. Never share a card PIN or a bank code with anyone.
