The short answer

You know Tatkal opens a day before the journey: 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC, India time. What changed is who can use IRCTC's website and app for it. Since 1 July 2025, only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book Tatkal there, and from 15 July 2025 each online Tatkal booking also needs an Aadhaar-linked one-time code. Many NRIs don't hold Aadhaar, which closes that route. Here is what is left, and what to do with a date that is close.

In order

What to do, step by step

01

Know what the rule covers

It applies to booking on IRCTC's own website and app. IRCTC has also limited the first day of booking, 60 days ahead, to Aadhaar-authenticated users, reported as running to midnight from 12 January 2026. These rules have changed several times in a year, so check IRCTC before you plan around them.

02

Check whether you can get Aadhaar

An NRI with a valid Indian passport can enrol for Aadhaar, and the 182-day residence rule doesn't apply to NRIs (UIDAI's 2026 handbook). Enrolment is done at a centre in India, so it suits your next visit more than this week's trip. The one-time code goes to the mobile number linked to Aadhaar, so check with UIDAI which number to link.

03

Ask a relative with an Aadhaar-authenticated account

A relative in India whose IRCTC account is authenticated can book Tatkal for you or your parents. They need to be online at 10:00 AM (AC) or 11:00 AM (non-AC) the day before, India time, with each passenger's details ready, and the code goes to their own phone. It works if they have the time and the seats don't vanish in minutes.

04

Don't make Tatkal the plan if your dates are known

Tatkal is a small quota. If you already know your dates, send us the journey as soon as your flights are booked. We tell you when booking opens and what is realistic, well before Tatkal is the only thing left.

05

Or hand Tatkal to a licensed agent

Send the journey and passenger details on WhatsApp the day before. The ticket is booked in the passenger's own name, the PNR comes to you to check on IRCTC or NTES, and if it doesn't confirm you hear straight away, with time left for another plan.

06

Keep a backup

A Tatkal waiting list is a long shot, because confirmed Tatkal tickets aren't refunded on cancellation and few berths come back into it. Look at the next train, another class or the next day as well.

Avoid these

Mistakes that cost people the journey

  • Assuming an IRCTC account without Aadhaar authentication can book Tatkal
  • Finding out at 10:00 AM that your relative's account isn't authenticated
  • Treating Tatkal as the plan when your dates were fixed weeks ago
  • Holding a Tatkal waiting list as if it were a ticket

What we can and can't do

Tatkal is a small quota and popular trains sell out within minutes — nobody can promise a seat exists on your train. What we do is choose the train, class and quota most likely to work, book it in the passenger's name, and tell you straight away if it hasn't, so there is still time for another plan. Confirmed, or 100% refund.

Questions

Answered straight

Is Aadhaar mandatory for Tatkal booking on IRCTC?+

On the IRCTC website and app, yes. Since 1 July 2025 only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book Tatkal there, and from 15 July 2025 each online Tatkal booking needs an Aadhaar-linked one-time code. The rules have been revised several times, so check IRCTC for the current position.

Can an NRI get an Aadhaar card?+

Yes. An NRI with a valid Indian passport can enrol, and the 182-day residence rule doesn't apply to NRIs. Enrolment is done at an Aadhaar centre in India.

Can my relative in India book Tatkal for me?+

Yes, if their IRCTC account is Aadhaar-authenticated. They need to be online at 10:00 AM for AC classes or 11:00 AM for non-AC, the day before the journey, with each passenger's details ready.

Does the Aadhaar rule apply to normal bookings too?+

IRCTC has limited the first day of booking, 60 days ahead, on its website and app to Aadhaar-authenticated users, and reports in January 2026 put that window until midnight on that day. Check IRCTC for the current position before you plan around it.

Can you book Tatkal for my parents or me from abroad?+

Yes. Tatkal opens one day before the journey, at 10:00 AM India time for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC. Send the journey and passenger details the day before, and we handle the booking window on India time while you sleep.

What if the Tatkal ticket doesn't confirm?+

Only a confirmed (CNF) berth counts, and RAC doesn't. If we can't deliver a confirmed berth, you get a 100% refund with no questions asked, usually the same day and always within 48 hours of asking, or the alternative that suits you better.
